Varunzel (also called Raprian, Varapunzel or Varipunzel) is the name of the pairing between Rapunzel Corona from Tangled and Varian from Tangled: The Series. Though not a widely popular ship, it does have many fans.
Relationship Overview[]
Among fans that have watched the Tangled TV series, there is a theory that while Rapunzel is connected to a flower that came from the sun, Varian could somehow be connected to the sharp, black rocks that came from the moon and that his hair could glow a bright moonlight blue; just as Rapunzel's can glow a sunlight like glow. As both of their fathers didn't want them going near the rocks and due to Rapunzel's nightmare of an enraged Varian running towards her while the number of the rocks kept on growing to his rage. This Moon theory (the nickname that fans have given the Tangled series theory) could even have Gothel kidnapping Varian for his powers, which would have him and Rapunzel being raised together as siblings that look out for each other. Even though the season two finale and throughout season three has disproven the popular Moon Varian theory, some fans still use the idea in this and other Varian related pairing, along with a few AUs. Because of the big age gap between them many fans prefer to ship them as friends for siblings, even though there have been a few who have het shipped them by making Varian older and more around Rapunzel's age. The same age alteration is sometimes used in the Vassandra pairing.
While the TV series its self, Rapunzel had met Varian when she learned that he could help her uncover the mystery of her hair's return and when the black rocks came to his village, he promised that he'll help her and her friends to also uncover the mystery behind them. When a curse powered blizzard hit Corona, however, Varian's father, Quirin was being encased by an amber-like substance - that he created in his attempt to clean away the black rocks - and turned to Rapunzel for help. Rapunzel wanted to help her young friend, but she couldn't leave the kingdom as she was placed as the temporary Queen (when her parents were away) at the time and with the rest of its people needing her more; all she could do was beg the guards to not harm the young alchemist as he was being dragged out of the castle, while he pleaded for Rapunzel to help his father and to remember her promise to him. After the storm had cleared Rapunzel thought about her actions towards Varian and what they had turned him into when the enraged alchemist that vowed to make the princess and her people pay for turning their backs on him. Despite Varian's actions towards her, when he stole the Sun Drop flower, Rapunzel urged her father to help the vengeful teen come to his scenes; indicating that Rapunzel believes that there is a chance for Varian to be good again. As there was a moment that he was about to regret his actions and accept her apology, until the sound of guards made Varian think/believe that she can't keep a promise.
Despite how things had ended between them, fans believe that Rapunzel would find away to calm Varian's rage, as well as helping him to become the alchemist she befriended again. Some fans have Varian accompanying Rapunzel on her journey in season two, in hopes that it would allow them to find away to save his father.
After Rapunzel returns to Corona at the beginning of season three, Rapunzel and Varian were able to rekindle their friendship, despite the cruel welcome he gave her when he sided with the Separatists of Saporia, until he choice to side with Rapunzel in order to stop them. As Varian had became resentful of his past towards Corona and its princess and wanted to erase the memory of it; and after they saved the kingdom together Rapunzel used what she learned on her journey to finally free Varian's father from the amber. After words Varian helps Rapunzel and a few of her friend to fix the damaged throne room from the Saporian's attack. Rapunzel and Varian team up again to stop the fear paralysing red rocks using the same amber solution that had trapped Varian's father. On their journey Rapunzel notices Varian's panicky demeanour and assures him that the visions the rocks are showing him aren't real, only for Varian to respond that they are in fact visions of his past mistakes and events that were very real for him. He notes that Rapunzel doesn't have the same fears as he does as she is the 'magical wonderous sundrop' and that fear for ordinary people like himself is far more debilitating. Rapunzel comforts him by holding his hand and telling him that there is nothing ordinary about him. Varian uses the amber compound on the red rocks, hiding behind Rapunzel and her hair, only for there to be no reaction. Varian comes to the conclusion that solution will only work on black rocks so they climb to the top of the cavern to reach the only remaining black rock. Varian falls but is swiftly caught by Rapunzel with her hair. Varian expresses doubts again to which Rapunzel responds by voicing her own fears, the downfall of Corona at the hands of her once best friend Cassandra, and this time Varian comforts Rapunzel. Together with new found courage and comfort in each other they are able to defeat the red rocks, celebrating with a hug and some well earned praises. Varian aids Rapunzel with the defeat of the series main antagonist Zhan Tiri along with their other friends.
