Storybrooke AU (also called Once Upon a Time AU and OUAT AU) is a fairly new AU (Alternate Universe) within the Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons fandom. In the AU, Rapunzel, Merida, Hiccup and Jack Frost were sent from the Enchanted Forest, a world of fairy tale characters, to the small town of Storybrooke, Maine from Once Upon a Time. This is considered a sub-scenario of Modern AU and Fairy Tale AU.

About this AU[]

The world of Once Upon a Time has been a popular universe for fans to use for crossovers. Storybrooke (found in our world, known as "The Land Without Magic") is the perfect location for the Big Four to interact because of a number of reasons: it is a location for a multitude of fairy tale worlds where magic and science-fiction-based elements can be found, famous characters and aspects of folklore and literature (like the Guardians, the Boogieman, Rapunzel, the Snow Queen, dragons, fairiesCount Dracula, etc.) would be able to coexist and can allow a contrast between their lives in these magical worlds and our modern world. Because of this, this AU can simultaneously act as Modern AU and Fairy Tale AU.

Some aspects of the fandom take place in a modern world (Rise of the Guardians and Hotel Transylvania) while others happen in locations in an earlier, more magical point in history (Tangled and Brave) or in worlds surreal beyond belief (The Lorax and The Croods), so the idea of different realms sharing the same universe as the real world like in the show would make sense.

Featured Characters[]

The Big Four[]

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

Heir of the Hooligan Tribe and "prince" of the far-off land of Berk in the Barbaric Archipelago, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was the black sheep of his tribe, unable to fight off dragons that plague their land and only causing more trouble in the process. Everything changed however when he shot down and befriended the Night Fury Toothless. After a harrowing battle against the Red Death, Hiccup was able to show everybody that dragons could be trained and peace reigned over the land.

In Storybrooke, Hiccup (presumably under a different name) is stripped of all of his heroic merits and made a loser again. Losing his leg in an "accident", Hiccup works with his Uncle in his auto-shop. He is repeatedly picked on by old friends (Snotlout, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, etc.) and recurring enemies (Dagur the Deranged) from his old land, his father doing nothing to stop it out of embarrasment. Without his other half, Hiccup is left alone and afraid in a town that seems to hate him for his unintimidating demeanor.

Because dragons are not native to the Land Without Magic, whether or not Toothless or the other dragons ever appear in Storybrooke, whether or not they are still dragons and changed into some other species, or left behind on Berk differs from story to story. The only exception to this rule being Maleficent, an evil sorcerous trapped in the form of a dragon beneath the Storybrooke Library as part of her "punishment" by the curse.

Jack Frost[]

Sacrificing himself to save his little sister from drowning, Jack was resurrected by the all-powerful Man in the Moon into the Spirit of Winter and eventual Guardian of Fun Jack Frost. He protects the children of the realm (and parts beyond), using his winter magic to instill fun in children during hard times and fighting off dark forces that threaten them. Being immortal, as well as acting on behalf of an all-powerful force of good, it is possible that Jack (and the Guardians) would have a close association with the Blue Fairy and possibly darker forces that would try to use them like Peter Pan and Rumpelstiltskin.

When the curse struck, Jack Frost reverted back into his human identity Jackson Overland. Though a normal human being (his hair and eyes restored to their natural brown color), his "punishment" by the curse leaves the homeless teenager ignored by the general populous, his mischief and cries for attention having him thrown in Sheriff Graham's jail-cell for the night. Other writers like to leave him in a position where he is forced to live with Pitch Black as his son, providing misery for the both of them. Because of Jack's love of children, Jack would possess a close brotherly bond with Henry Mills in the same manner as he does with Jamie.

Merida DunBroch[]

Once-upon-a-time-season-5-merida-abc

Merida in Once Upon a Time

Princess of her kingdom and firstborn heir of the clan DunBroch, Merida DunBroch was forced by her mother to marry one of the other clan-heirs. Hoping to change her fate, Merida rides Angus to the Dark Castle and asks the mad sorcerer Rumpelstiltskin to change her fate. Seeing similarities between her and a former prince from a nearby kingdom he worked with in the past, he gives her the same spell he gave to the prince in exchange for her bear-necklace, turning her mother and her brothers into bears in the process. She mends the bond, breaks the spell and leaves relations between the clans and themselves stronger in the process.

In Storybrooke, all that was learned from their adventures were left forgotten. Due to the differing politics of the small American town, Fergus and Elinor would hold a non-royal, but still upper-class, position in Storybrooke, possibly even holding some kind of professional relationship with Regina. Elinor tries to indulge Merida in "traditional", more shallow methods of high-class living, pairing her up with her associate's sons and voicing her disappointment in Merida's tomboyish interests.

Since appearing in the season five premiere episode "The Dark Swan", Merida becomes an in-canon character in the show.

Rapunzel Corona[]

Rapunzel Once Upon A Time

Rapunzel in Once Upon a Time

As the lost princess of Corona, Rapunzel Corona was kidnapped as a baby by Mother Gothel to use her for her power. Rapunzel possesses magical hair that can heal the sick and injured, restore youth and glow when sung too. Whether or not Eugene ever finds her in this incarnation differs from story to story.

In Storybrooke, Rapunzel (presumably under a different name, due to her notable fairy tale name) lives with her verbally and/or physically abusive mother in plain view of everybody around her, unable to cry out to anyone. Because magic does not naturally exist in Storybrooke, Rapunzel's hair would be brown, turning back to blonde when Mr. Gold brings magic to the town.

There are two iterations of Rapunzel in the show but the second iteration resembles more closely to Rapunzel, appearing in season seven 7th episode "Eloise Gardener", Rapunzel becomes an in-canon character in the show. The first Rapunzel that was seen in the earlier season of the show is focused around the original fairy tale of Rapunzel, while the second Rapunzel is of Tangled. Once Rapunzel two is also the show's version of the evil step mother of its second Cinderella.

Queen Elsa of Arendelle[]

Elsa in Once Upon a Time

As the newly crowned Queen of Arendelle, Queen Elsa, also known as the Snow Queen, was born with the magic of winter. After getting into an argument with her sister Anna, her powers are accidentally revealed to the rest of the kingdom. She banishes herself from her own kingdom into the north mountain, creating her own castle as a new home. However, as revealed by Anna, Elsa's powers ended up cursing the kingdom into a never-ending Winter. After freezing Anna's heart and nearly dying by Hans's sword, Elsa realizes that love, which is said to be the most powerful magic of all in the original show, is how she can control her powers, ending the eternal winter, bringing back summer and bringing peace back to the land. Because of Elsa's immense power, a multitude of people would go to her kingdom for differing intentions. Royals like King George, Sir Maurice and King Midas would go to her for help or alliance, while spell-casters like Queen Regina, Rumpelstiltskin and even the Blue Fairy would visit either out of curiosity or an attempt at using her power for their own.

In Storybrooke, Elsa is left alone in her estate, unable to help her sister in her relationship with Hans. Because magic doesn't exist in Storybrooke naturally, her hair would be brown instead of platinum blonde (said to be caused by her magic by the original creators of Frozen) and would not have her powers until Mr. Gold brings magic to the town.

In the end of the season three finale "There's No Place Like Home", an urn found in Rumpelstiltskin's vault was opened when Emma, Hook and Marian went back to the present. The urn was sent with them and opened, revealing that Elsa was imprisoned in the urn, and is now loose in Storybrooke, making Elsa an actual character in-canon with Once Upon a Time.

Princess Anna of Arendelle[]

Anna in Once Upon a Time

Second in line to the throne of Arendelle, Princess Anna is the outgoing younger sister of Queen Elsa. Convinced that her and Prince Hans of the Southern Isles were in love, she goes to her sister to bless their marriage. They get into an argument that accidentally reveals Elsa's powers in front of the entire kingdom. After leaving to get Elsa back, Anna meets Kristoff, Sven and Olaf along the way. After nearly dying of a frozen heart, Anna manages to help Elsa realize how to control her powers, ending the eternal winter that plagued the kingdom and peace was restored.

In Storybrooke, Anna is forced into an abusive, gold-digging marriage with Hans while Kristoff is left worked a low-income job like the dwarfs, neither remembering who they were or what they had together.

Since the season premiere episode "A Tale of Two Sisters", Anna has become an in-canon character within the show.

Mavis Dracula[]

Hailing from her father's castle in the Land Without Color, Mavis Dracula yearned for a life beyond her castle walls. Her father holds a prejudice of humans, leading her to believe that all humans are evil. That is until a young man by the name of Jonathan Harker stumbles across the castle by accident, convinced it's some type of sanctuary. Dracula tries to get rid of Johnny quietly, disguising him as a monster to lower suspicion. Johnny and Mavis eventually fall in love and, through trials and tribulation, peace is made between Johnny and her family as the couple explore the world (and possibly beyond).

In Storybrooke, Mavis (presumably under a different name) lives with her single father in their family Hotel, his overprotective tendencies leaving the bond between the two fragile and uneasy.

Whether or not Mavis and her father know Dr. James Whale/Victor Frankenstein differs from story to story.

Tinker Bell[]

Tinkerbell-OUaT

Tinker Bell in the OUAT Series

Tinker Bell is one of the many fairies living in the Enchanted Forest and working under the Blue Fairy's supervision. Tink is also a very talented Tinker-talent Fairy, as she saved Spring by combining human items (that she collects) with her extremely efficient machines and using the Mirror of Incanta to make the Fall Scepter for the Moonstone shards. At the beginning however, Tink wasn't happy with her talent as she believed that her life would be nothing but pots and kettles, while her friends and their talents allow them to fly over to the main land and change the seasons; so she asks her friends to teach them their talents, so she can see the main land with her own eyes. But when she used her talent as Tinker to saving the coming season, the Blue Fairy and the overseer of the Tinkers, Fairy Mary found a fixed Music Box and asked Tinker Bell to return it to it's owner in the world outside their realm. Since Tink is curious about the lost items she finds, the humans that might have owned them, along with the other kinds of magic and mysteries in the Enchanted Forest; her curiosity of her glowing wings allowed her to find and meet her winter fairy sister, Periwinkle.

In Storybrooke, she is a normal-sized woman and she works at a mechanics, clock maker's shop or at a repair shop with her foster mother (Fairy Mary) and brothers (Clank and Bobble). Mr. Gold sometimes gets her to fix items in his shop. She sometimes picks up thrown away items for her little projects, like a wined up firefly and a dancing fairy on top of a music box. While her friends and the other Pixie Hollow fairies have jobs that are similar to their talents: Rosetta a gardener, Silvermist a plumber, Iridessa sells light bolds or fixes the town's lamps, Fawn works at a pet shop or helps out at a animal shelter, while Vidia fixes fans or jogs around the town. Since pixie dust doesn't exist in the land without magic, Terence and the other Dust-Talent fairies would work as cleaners or other jobs that involves dust or glitter. Tinker Bell meets Emma Swam when her curious got the batter of her and when Emma's car needed to be fix. When the curse was lifted and their memories and magic returned, the fairies are able to turn into their true forms, so they could fly and use the magic that are connected to their talents again. While Tinker Bell used her returned memories to reunite herself with her friends and sister.

Although Tink is already in the series, mostly as Peter Pan's fairy and not much as a fairy of Pixie Hollow (or Disney's Fairies) in-canon.

Jamie Bennett[]

Curious and fascinated by the things he discovers, Jamie Bennett has gathered plenty of proof to prove the existence of those he believes in. He has a strong belief in the things that others don't, and continues to believe even when everyone else tells him to forget it and except reality. His strong beliefs, pure heart and faithfulness prove to be his strength and help him to prove once and for all that magic and the people who wield it are real. This would make him the town's equivalent of Henry Mills.

Queen Iduna of Arendelle[]

In season 4 of the OUAT series, the former Queen of Arendelle, as an in-canon within the show, is known as Gerda instead of Iduna, as well as her OUAT counterpart having two older sisters where the oldest of three has ice powers like Elsa. The tragic event of her past and her daughters looking into the true reason why she and her husband went out to sea, triggers the present-day events that are seen in season 4.
