Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons Wiki

Pirate AU is a popular AU (Alternate Universe) within the Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons fandom. In the AU, Merida, Rapunzel, Hiccup and Jack Frost are all shipmates as pirates, off on different adventures across the seven seas. Because it is not canon, ideas for this AU are shown through fanfiction, fanart, and other fan-made works.

About the AU

Spawned from fanart, Pirate AU slowly grew into a developed section of the fandom with stories, mockup art and fanart showcasing the Big Four (and some significant others) as the crew of a pirate ship on different misadventures.

Featured Characters

The Big Four

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

Tamer and first-mate of the crew. Debatably one of the more sensible of the bunch, this peg-legged Viking ran from his home to protect his closest friend the uncredited fifth crew member Toothless. Many like to equate Hiccup's admission to the crew as a means of protecting Toothless from his dragon-killing tribe. Because of the original-book's incarnation of Hiccup having a history with pirates, fans like the idea of the film's version of Hiccup working with or at least associating himself with pirates.

Hiccup being a natural-born leader in-canon, can even make Hiccup a pirate captain of his own crew; and the Night Fury insignia or Berk's crest can serve as the mark on his ship's flag. His crew can be of his fellow Dragon Riders of Berk (or any of the other members in the fandom) and fans have commonly named his ship, the Night Fury.

Jack Frost

Man of the crow's nest, acrobat and assassin of the crew. Jackson "Frost" Overland has a wit that can run circles over his captain and has the feet to match, ever stealthy and shoeless. His origins are a mystery to everyone and himself, something that could explain his pale skin and white hair. He can also be seen as a infamous pirate captain or a wanted mercenary, as well known pirates were feared throughout the sea.

Merida DunBroch

Captain of the crew and former heir of the clan DunBroch. To change her fate, Merida ran away from home to freedom in the open ocean. Gathering a crew, Merida became the captain under one of the most notorious pirate flags with one of the biggest band of misfits to ever sail. Despite her ill temper, she treats her crew like family and is willing to die for them like a true captain. Fans also see her as a bounty hunter, as she hunts and fights every pirates she comes across so she could someday make the sea safe for other ships to sail upon.

Rapunzel Corona

Lost princess of Corona, Rapunzel is the cabin girl and newest member of the crew. New to the ocean, fate has seen her sense of wonder and desire for adventure and brought her to the unlikely three. Stories commonly make it to where Rapunzel knew of her royal heritage, unlike the movie where she did not know, while there are also stories where Rapunzel (still not knowing of her heritage) ran away from her overprotective mother to prove that she could handle herself in the world. She can also be cast in stories as her princess self being held as a hostage or bargaining chip to the pirate crew. Corona's crest is sometimes placed as Rapunzel's pirate tattoo, the shape of the pendent around her neck or as the mark on a pirate flag; when it is placed with a skull. Instead of a parrot, she'll have a chameleon by her side. There have even been fans who have Rapunzel as the Captain of her own crew.

In Tangled: The Series, Rapunzel converted her traveling caravan into a ship and acted like a sailor while on the open sea. She even wore a pirate caption's hat.

Extra Characters

Since Kakamora are a tribe of pirates, people portray them as a band of human pirates. With one of their face paint designs as the mark on their flag. Tamatoa can also be portrayed as a human pirate (with a peg leg), so he could be their captain, or as a member of their crew that is waiting for the right moment to steal all the treasure they find for himself.

Since Zarina had spent time as Captain to James Hook's crew before they reveal their true attention, along with fighting alongside Tinker Bell and her friends as Pirate Fairies, she can be portrayed as the Pirate Caption of one of those two crews or of a pirate crew of her very own. As a Human or remaining fairy.

Drago Bludvist

Drago's feared and conquering history can easily make him a well-known and feared pirate captain, with the Conqueror and his army as his pirate ship and crew. His Bewilderbeast can be the mark on his flag, or any of the other dragon shape crests that are on the sails of his armada's ships.

Pitch Black

Since Pitch was a pirate captain in the Guardians of Childhood books, along with having the Nightmare Galleon as his ship and Nightmare Pirates as his crew; he can be portrayed as his pirate self. Sailing the seas instead of the galaxy.

Lady Caine

Caine being the leader of small band of pirates and criminals in Corona can easily have her portrayed as herself, and as a pirate captain that sails the sea with her crew. Her skull and rose tattoo on her arm can be used as the mark on her ship's flag. Like her backstory in Tangled: Before Ever After, her father was arrested when she was a child and to get revenge on the people that punished him for being a criminal, she took charge of her father's crew and terrorized the waters surrounding Corona to get back at its people. Caine can even be a member of a rival pirate crew of Rapunzel's, when she is portrayed as a high or low ranking member (like captain or cabin girl) of her pirate crew. Since she and the other criminals that were caught in Corona had took over the ship that was transporting them to a distant prison, before they were re-caught by Rapunzel and her travelling party.

Moana Waialiki

Since both pirates and wayfinders are sailors who sail the high seas and work together as a team to steer their ships, Moana and a hand full of her people can easily serve as a band of pirates that sail the waters of the South Pacific ocean; with Moana as their captain. When the Heart of Te Fiti was stolen from the Island Goddess and Moana realizing the danger that the world and the ocean is in, she and a small band of her loyal crew members - Pua, Heihei and Maui - decided to find the heart and return it to the goddess to save the world, and to make the ocean safe to sail upon again. Human versions of the Kakamora can serve as a rival crew of Moana's, since they both come from the same film.

Hiro Hamada

Hiro would most likely be placed as a cabin boy, due to his young age. While being the leader of Big Hero 6 could have Hiro as a captain of his own ship, with the rest of Big Hero 6 as his crew.

In the Big Hero 6: The Series Halloween episode, "Obake Yashiki", Hiro was dressed up as pirate, beside Baymax (who had wore the same pirate costume in the "Baymax and Fred" short). Fans could have Hiro his pirate costume in the AU, for fun.

Queen Elsa

Elsa is seen as a pirate captain of her own ship and crew. This sometimes places Anna as her righthand woman, and instead of a parrot Bruni can serve as the captain's little friend. Sometimes Elsa is cast as herself who ran away from Arendelle in fear that her powers could hurt people, and became a shaman woman to be herself and ‘let it go,’ or can be cast in her Queen status being held hostage.

Princess Anna

Anna is commonly placed as Elsa’s right-hand woman, or as the pirate captain of her own crew. She can also be cast as a hostage princess.

Luka Couffaine

Due to to the time when his mother was turned into Captain Hardrock, a pirate-themed villain, fans use that fact to portray or to simply dress Luka and his sister up as pirates, for fun.

Juleka Couffaine

Due to to the time when her mother was turned into Captain Hardrock, a pirate-themed villain, fans use that fact to portray or to simply dress Juleka and her brother up as pirates, for fun.
