Pico is Antonio Madrigal's cheeky, keel-billed toucan friend, who serves as a minor character of Disney's 60th animated featured film, Encanto.

Appearance[]

Pico looks like a typical South American toucan. His body is mostly covered in black feathers, except for his face and chest which are bright yellow. His bill is long and curved at the front, mostly lime green in color with splashes of magenta, orange, and sky blue.

Personality[]

Pico only appears in a few scenes, but he is seen to be playful and energetic. He's also a sociable bird, being the first animal to approach Antonio and ask him if he can bring his friends and family along. Later, Pico is seen following Mirabel around Bruno's room, but he doesn't stick around to accompany her up the long flights of stairs, instead choosing to fly to the top himself. His interactions with Mirabel also show some sarcastic and cowardly sides to this personality. He gives Mirabel a deadpan stare when she almost falls off a cliff. Then, when Bruno's room proves to be too scary for him, he flies away and leaves Mirabel behind, to which she calls him a quitter.

Powers and Abilities[]

As a bird, Pico has the ability of flight through his wings.

Role in the Crossover[]

Pico is usually seen alongside Antonio in official material. Thus, if Antonio is used in the RotBTD crossover, Pico is usually by his side. In some AUs where the characters may not have magic, Pico is often still around as an exotic pet.

Relationships[]

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

Jack Frost[]

Since toucans live in the warm and tropical areas of South America, he likely would not have encountered Jack Frost in his life. Even if he did, he likely wouldn't be able to see him, since a bird would not know who Jack Frost is.

Merida DunBroch[]

Rapunzel Corona[]

Rapunzel is a lover of animals, so she would likely enjoy Pico's company and maybe try to play with him. For the most part, though, she would respect that he is a wild animal and a friend of Antonio's.

Mirabel Madrigal[]

As Antonio's cousin, Mirabel respects his animal friends and treats them kindly. The animals are not as close with the other Madrigals as they are with Antonio, but they do often interact with them. For Pico, he appears on his own inside of Bruno's room when Mirabel goes in there. Although she tries to be friendly with him and hopes he'll accompany her, Pico doesn't actually do much to support her. He flies to the top of Bruno's stairs and leaves her to climb them herself, gives her an unimpressed look when she almost falls off a cliff, and ultimately leaves her behind when he realizes that Bruno's cave is too scary. Mirabel calls Pico a quitter and seems annoyed with his actions in this scene, but she most likely doesn't hold it against him since Pico is, in fact, a bird.

Antonio Madrigal[]

Antonio is the Madrigal who receives the Gift of communicating with animals. Once the Gift Ceremony happens and Antonio receives his Gift, Pico is the first to come and talk to him. He lands on Antonio's shoulder almost immediately after he touches the door, talking to him in chirps. Antonio is happy to realize that he can understand what the bird is saying, and Pico asks to bring his friends and family to the party, to which Antonio agrees. Pico is also seen on Antonio's arm in various subsequent parts of the movie, such as when they appear in Bruno's hideout. Pico appears to be part of Antonio's main group of animal friends, alongside Parce and Chispi. They are often seen together on promotional material for the film as well. Thus, it can be concluded that they are close friends. Despite this, when the magic disappears, all of Antonio's friends flee the home and don't return to his side until he gets his Gift back in the end. Therefore, their friendship seems to be dependent on whether or not Antonio is able to communicate with them.

In some fan interpretations, Antonio sometimes confides his feelings in his animals, though whether or not they understand depends on the animal's level of intelligence. There's also a fan theory which states that Antonio was sending his animals friends to aid and watch over Mirabel on her quest to save the magic, which is why Pico appears with Mirabel in Bruno's room.
