Appearance[]
Personality[]
In general, Marinette is a sweet, kind, helpful, and creative teenage girl who adores fashion and art, and genuinely loves all of her friends and family. Although she can be clumsy to the point of exasperation at times, she possesses a good heart, being helpful and handing out her time to anyone who needs it, especially those who are insecure. Her care for others is so deep that she would readily place their feelings before her own, even if it comes at personal cost, example being when she reluctantly accepts hearing Kagami’s declaration to discard her friendship with Marinette to have a chance with Adrien. Even though Marinette is kind and empathetic to many people, she can be very annoyed with people (such as Chloé, for example) who push her buttons too far. Additionally, she can be very irrational and impulsive at times, since she was quick to blame the suspects in Chloé’s stolen bracelet case and can unintentionally cause herself dilemmas by acting without thinking. She is also known to be very jealous of her love rivals, with her insecurity often creating unimaginable fantasies of Adrien and his “other girlfriend” that would most likely not come true. To add to this, Marinette can get in over her head a bit and has a tend to to get her head stuck in the clouds, since she sometimes imagines her and Adrien pursuing a relationship that lasts for the rest of their lives in a rather ideal (and highly detailed) life together. Despite these flaws, Marinette learns from her mistakes, and is not close-minded to the prospect of taking advice from other people.
A main trait for Marinette is her past bumbles and slight social awkwardness. Despite being good in a conversation and can be calm in a serious situation, Marinette can become very stiff or awkward, and even quick to panic when the topic turns out to be something personal, like her love life. This mainly stems from low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence, but ever since she took the Ladybug Miraculous, she has become more confident in her actions.
As Ladybug, Marinette, while still retaining most of her civilian characteristics, is able to keep her persona far from the one she has in real life. When she becomes a superhero, Marinette becomes clever and rather analytical, while retaining a strong sense of justice in both egos. She is also able to scope out anything helpful or out of place in an area easily, and often uses her creative mind to pick out the details. She is far more confident and brave in this form, although bumbles do happen to her from time to time. Ladybug is a serious adversary who will not go down easily and is more that capable to get herself out of a situation. At first, she will resort to calming down the Akumatized supervillains, especially when they happen to be her personal friends, but when faced with no other choice she will fight them if necessary. Just like her usual form, she values honesty and justice for other people, showing she still retains her empathy as a hero. Ladybug usually does not rely on her emotions to make decisions, as she claims a good superhero always listens to her head. This proves to be true since she can make hasty decisions at times.
Marinette takes her image and Miraculous powers as Ladybug very seriously, and can be shown to not tolerate dishonorable actions at times. However, she is calm when spoken to, and tries to handle things calmly, cautiously, and rationally, such as Cat Noir’s flirtations with her.
In both forms, Marinette strives to help people and keep the secret of her identities, and as such is considered by her people to be an ideal superhero, with some exceptions.
At the start of season 4, Marinette no longer pursues Adrien, as she puts her feelings on hold due to her responsibilities as Ladybug, but this proves to only be the beginning of recognizing the true pressures of keeping her superhero identity secret. Due to her duty, Marinette is forced to lie to her loved ones, which strains her relationship with other people, including her best friends and Luka (with whom she apparently formed an off-screen relationship with). This begins to cause Marinette stress and slight grief from keeping secrets and actually starts to break down from the pressure she feels, which she rarely does, as her previous stresses barely involved her becoming intensely emotional to the point of allowing them to flow. The responsibility of being Ladybug proves to cause Marinette pressure, and it is through this pressure that she begins to build walls around the truth and is unwilling to talk to anyone about the truth or her feelings out of fear she will be left alone in the end, which only further pushes everyone she cares about away, an example being her friends and Luka, with whom she broke up with due to these secrets. This could point to Marinette being afraid to allow her true emotions out, since she seems scared that Alya would turn away from her just as she was about it to reveal her secret, feeling more alone than she ever did before. Marinette does not usually rely on her emotions for answers, and often puts everyone else’s feelings before her own, so it can be assumed that this causes her to bury her true emotions in order to keep to keep her secret, but by doing this she pushes everyone away and only feels alone in the end because she struggles to balance her sacred responsibility with her personal life. All at once these emotions combines together and ultimately form Marinette’s breakdown.
Powers and Abilities[]
Although Marinette does not naturally possess magic of her own, she, through the Ladybug Miraculous, gains its power of creation as she uses it to keep Paris safe. Being an animated character, Marinette has more stamina, strength, and durability than a regular human, especially after becoming Ladybug. She is known for using her yo-yo as her main weapon, and is very skilled in using it for all kinds of stunts, although it is unknown if this applies to her as Ladybug or in general as well. Because Marinette is young, however, she is only able to create a Lucky Charm, an object that is created through the superpower her Miraculous grants her, once per "charge"; as using this causes the Miraculous to begin a countdown that de-transforms her back into Marinette when it hits zero. This down side is the reason why she has to be careful about when she uses Lucky Charm, as well as making sure that she has enough time to figure out what she is suppose to do with it. That way she'll be able to use the Lucky Charm to fix the damage of her battles with the Miraculous Ladybug superpower, while still having enough time to find a safe place to de-transform. After Ladybug meets Bunnix in seas on three, she learns that her future adult self is able to use her superpower without the need to recharge.
