Maleficent AU (also known as Sleeping Beauty AU) is an alternate universe usually within the Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons universe, but it is also with Rise of the Brave Tangled Frozen Dragons universe. In the AU, Rapunzel, Merida, Hiccup, and Jack are most of the main characters within the tale of Sleeping Beauty, most notably the original Disney animated film and the live-action remake in 2014. This AU is also an offshoot of Fairy Tale AU.

About The AU

Spawned from fan art, this is based on (or even occurs within the same world) the story of Sleeping Beauty, which was also a popular story for centuries. In this AU, the characters live within the same world as the events of Sleeping Beauty and the looming influence of its villain Maleficent. The concept is not that far, as both royalty and fairies are very prominent in the fandom.

As the name implies, the AU's direct influence comes from the original Disney adaptation of the traditional fairy tale, as well as the live-action remake, though this is not required.

The Big Four

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

Hiccup is portrayed to be Diaval the crow, as he can be turned into human form as himself and also into dragons for all the animal needs, such as a terrible terror for the crow and Toothless or Hookfang as the dragon at the end of the movie. Hiccup is also portrayed as a male Aurora/Sleeping Beauty for the Hijack, Mericcup, Hicclout, Dagcup and Hiccstrid pairings, while the Hiccunzel and Hiccelsa pairings have cast Hiccup as Prince Phillip. There have even been rare occasions when Hiccup has been featured as Maleficent.

Jack Frost

Jack is cast as Prince Phillip for the Hijack, Frostbite and Jelsa pairings. He can also be portrayed as a male Sleeping Beauty/Aurora, if Pitch Black is cast as a male Maleficent in stories based on the live-action remake. As there have been a few fanfics that have Pitch taking Jack under his wing after he became a spirit, and some other fanfics have Pitch reforming through the young winter spirit or one of Jack's friends. There have even been rare occasions when Jack has been cast as Maleficent.

Merida DunBroch

Merida is cast between Princess Aurora/Briar Rose and a female version of Prince Phillip for the Mericcup pairing.

Rapunzel Corona

Rapunzel is commonly seen as Sleeping Beauty/Aurora. There have also been fans that have portrayed her as Maleficent, for fun.

The Spinning Wheel, that Maleficent used to place Aurora in the death-like sleep, has a minor cameo in Tangled within Rapunzel's room as one of her possessions, in her tower. It is also seen in the Tangled: The Series episode "Keeper of the Spire", as one of the many items in the Spire's Vault wall.

Extra Characters

Queen Elsa

Because of the many similarities between the two characters (such as their mistaken identities as monsters, dangerous yet beautiful powers, and their journeys to learn to open up and love again), Elsa most commonly plays the part of Maleficent. Some fans use Elsa's original antagonist self, from one of the earlier layouts of Frozen, for the role; due to her Evil Elsa self and design being used in dark crossovers. While the Light Fury serves as Elsa's dragon self, just as Toothless has served as Hiccup's dragon self in a few dragon transformation related AUs (along with referencing the times when fans have the unnamed Light fury as Elsa's dragon for the Hiccelsa pairing and the Frozen Dragon crossover). She has also been cast as Aurora/Sleeping Beauty on some rare occasions.

Princess Anna

Whenever Elsa is portrayed as Maleficent and Kristoff as Phillip, Anna is seen as Sleeping Beauty/Aurora, mainly because they are both what helped Maleficent and Elsa open up to love again. She has also been cast as a female version of Prince Phillip for the Elsanna pairing.

Kristoff Bjorgman

For the Kristanna pairing, when Anna is Aurora, Kristoff is cast as Prince Phillip. Which could have a horse version of Sven as Phillip's steed, Samson.

Pitch Black

Pitch can be as a male version of Maleficent. As the two were cast out and want revenge on the ones that have "forgotten" them, by harming the people that they care about.

His favored Nightmare steed, Onyx, can serve as Diaval, since he is able to transform into a horse, human, crow, a dragon and into other kinds of animals, that could assist his master. While in the game version of Rise of the Guardians, Pitch's Nightmares take the form of other kinds of animals, so Onyx could take one of those forms for his role as Diaval.

Mother Gothel

When Rapunzel is placed as Sleeping Beauty/Aurora, Gothel is portrayed as Maleficent.

Vanellope von Schweetz

Since Vanellope meets the Netizen version of Sleeping Beauty/Aurora in Ralph Breaks the Internet, while traveling through the physical world within the real-life internet, fans can cast Vanellope as her for fun.

Toothiana

Tooth being a fairy that watches over children, could have her as one of the good fairies that blest the new born princess and later got the king and queen's permission to raise their child, so she and her allies could keep her safe from the villain fairy that cursed her. She has also cast as Sleeping Beauty/Princess Aurora for the Frostbite pairing.

Olaf

Some fans have either cast or simply dressed Olaf up as Sleeping Beauty/Aurora, for fun. Some fans are hoping that future Olaf Presents shorts would have the snowman preforming Sleeping Beauty.

Maximus

He can easily be cast as Samson, should Flynn be cast as Phillip from how Maximus commonly served as the former theif's main steed in the Tangled TV series.

Cassandra

In "Cassandra's Revenge", Cass crashes Eugene's real birthday party in order to make her demands for the scroll with Rapunzel, similar to how Maleficent crashed the celebration of Aurora's birth before placing a curse on the princess, to get back at the king. Because of this, Cassandra can easily be portrayed as Maleficent. Since Rapunzel is sometimes seen as Sleeping Beauty, and the live-action Maleficent films has the titled character forming a strong bond with the princess. There have also been fans who have portrayed Cassandra as a female Phillip, for fun and the fact that she has her own horse.

Prince Hans (Red Shoes)

In the end credits of Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, the smell of Hans' cooking awakens the Sleeping Beauty of Fairy Tale Isle from her slumber and after she was done eating the meal he was preparing for himself, the two are shown to a formed a bond. This could be due to the saying of woman loving men that can cook and that food has away to win people's hearts through their stoics. The bond that Hans forms with his film's version of Sleeping Beauty can easily cast him as Prince Phillip, since Merlin (of Red Shoes) also serves as Snow White's prince charming than just one of her seven dwarf friends beside Hans in the 2019 film.

Flynn Rider

Whenever Rapunzel is placed as Sleeping Beauty/Aurora, Flynn is portrayed as Prince Phillip.

Princess Fiona

In the fairy tale world of the Shrek universe, Fiona is friends with its version of Sleeping Beauty.

Archie

Archie's shapeshifting ability that allows him to turn from a dragon into a cat or a black colored bird, could possibly have him as Diaval. Who as a bird and dragon form in the first live-action Maleficent film.

Pitch Black

Fans have Pitch cast as a male version of Maleficent.

Nicholas St. North

Nicholas could be cast as King Hubert, for when Jack is cast as Prince Phillip since North is commonly viewed as a father figure to the young winter spirit.

Stoick the Vast

Stoick could be cast as King Stefan, for when Hiccup is cast as a male Aurora. While the times that Hiccup has been cast as Phillip could possibly have Stoick as King Hubert.

Valka

Elena being a princess who gets targeted by an evil user of magic that got upset with her family, could cast her as Aurora.
