Luisa Madrigal is the strongest member of the Madrigal family from Disney's 60th animated featured film, Encanto.
Appearance[]
Luisa is a 19-year old Colombian woman with fair skin, brown eyes and brown hair that she ties into a bun with a red ribbon. Due to her Gift of super-strength, Luisa spends a lot of time working out and has thus developed a large, muscular body. She is also the tallest member of her family.
Luisa wears a simple white blouse with red ribbons on the collar, and a long dark purple skirt with dumbbell patterns on the lower half. Her espadrilles are also dark purple and she has small feet like her mother and sisters.
Personality[]
Due to her status as the Strong Woman in town, Luisa projects an image of toughness and acts like nothing fazes her. She values being helpful and never says no to any task the townspeople give her. In truth, however, Luisa is quite sensitive and prone to stress. She even has a nervous tick where her eye twitches if she's particularly worried about something. In her song, "Surface Pressure," she confesses to Mirabel that she feels constant pressure to perform, always be helpful and never show any weakness, believing that she loses her worth is she is not of service to the people. Luisa wishes she could relax a little and be free from all the expectations (a scene which also reveals a whimsical, feminine side to her personality, as she imagines riding on sparkling donkey unicorns through cotton candy clouds), but feels like she would let the family down if she did.
During the film's events, Luisa is the first member of the family to start losing her magical Gift. This is hugely distressing for her, and she spends most of the rest of the film barely keeping it together emotionally (and failing). During Isabela's proposal dinner, she agrees to move the piano even though she knows she can't, and ends up breaking into sobs.
After the miracle dies and Casita falls, Luisa puts aside her feelings to help the family look for Mirabel. Once she is found, Mirabel tells Luisa that her worth is not just tied to her Gift. Luisa confesses to Mirabel and Isabela that she cries and shows weakness sometimes, and they assure her that this is normal.
After the magic returns, Luisa is happy to have her strength back, but she also makes sure to take the time she needs to relax.
Despite all the stress she is under, Luisa is always kind and considerate to those around her, never lashing out at anyone (she apologizes for merely raising her voice at Mirabel in once instance). She appears to be close with Mirabel and has a protectiveness toward her, as she is seen protecting her from all the non-diagetic imagery in her song sequence.
Powers and Abilities[]
Being part of a magical blessed family has Luisa being blessed with super strength. Her gift blessed strength was also shown to be linked to her door, from the way it started to flicker the moment she began to feel her powers fade away. Her Gift also appears to have the side-effect of invulnerability, as she's able to drop a boulder onto herself and let it shatter without flinching or getting hurt. Some fans have speculated that she may not even feel pain, but this is not confirmed.
Role in the Crossover[]
Relationships[]
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]
Jack Frost[]
Merida DunBroch[]
Both Luisa and Merida are strong women who are the older sisters. Merida has been shown to like strong, buff man would probably have Merida being impressed by Luisa and may want to spar with Luisa to see if her wit can help her overcome magical given strength. As her brothers have helped Merida defeat their father in a secret training match between them. Merida would also sympathy with Luisa when it comes to the pressure their families have placed upon them.
Rapunzel Corona[]
Mirabel Madrigal[]
Mirabel is Luisa's little sister. They seem to be fairly close, as Luisa is kind to Mirabel through all their interactions. Mirabel can sometimes be annoying to her with all her pestering and questions, but once she sees how stressed Luisa is, Mirabel gives her a hug and does what she can to reassure her of her value. Luisa also seems to be one of the few members of the family who doesn't underestimate Mirabel due to her lack of a Gift. She sends Mirabel to look through Bruno's room, telling her to be careful but still trusting her to find clues. At the end of the film, Luisa and Mirabel's closeness remains, as Mirabel (along with Isabela) hugs her sister and tells her that crying sometimes is normal.
For her part, Mirabel respects and looks up to Luisa as a Gifted member of the family, and doesn't seem to hold any bitterness toward her like she does with Isabela.
Alma Madrigal[]
Alma is Luisa's maternal grandmother and the head of the Madrigal family. Since Alma is known to have very high expectations of her family, Luisa puts herself under constant pressure to make her proud. Unfortunately, Alma doesn't realize that she is working her family too hard and is focusing more on the Gifts, as well as their image, than Luisa's feelings. (She sees Luisa crying after losing her Gift, and her first thought is that she's late to a meeting with the Guzmáns and will talk to Luisa later). However, this is not to say that she doesn't care about Luisa, just that her priorities are misplaced. By the end of the film, Alma realizes the error of her ways and apologizes to her family. It can be assumed that she is okay with Luisa learning to take time for herself.
Some fans like to speculate about what might have happened between Luisa and Alma before or after the events of the film. The general consensus is that Alma would apologize directly to Luisa for making her work so hard, and Luisa, being the humble soul that she is, would likely forgive her grandmother out of love.
Isabela Madrigal[]
Isabela is Luisa's older sister. Unfortunately, the two have minimal interactions during the movie. Isabela joins Mirabel in hugging Luisa at the end to assure her that crying is normal, but that is all. Most fans, however, like to think that they get along fairly well, due to the fact that they're both under a lot of pressure in their family and there would be a mutual understanding between them. Others speculate that they're both so busy, they may not spend much time together at all.
The spinoff Disney game Disney Magic Kingdoms recently had an Encanto event where Luisa and Isabela interact more. They seem to have a healthy sisterly banter which aligns with many fans' interpretations that they get along well. However, since this is a spinoff game, these interactions cannot be considered canon.
The Disney spinoff magazine "Disney Stars" contains a short story where Luisa asks for Isabela's help in finding a missing donkey. Isabela is cordial and happy to help, but unfortunately they can't find the donkey. It is unknown if these spinoff comics are considered canon.
Dolores Madrigal[]
Dolores is Luisa's cousin from her mom's side. However, there are no interactions between them in the movie, so their relationship is mostly left up to fan speculation. Like many family dynamics, most fans see them as being loving cousins who get along fairly well, but aren't particularly close nor do they fully understand each other's struggles. However, Dolores is the one who hears Luisa's eye twitching at night and alerts Mirabel to this, showing some level of concern for her cousin.
In the Disney spinoff magazine "Disney Stars," There is a short story that contains a small interaction between Luisa and Dolores. Luisa asks Dolores to listen for a missing donkey, and Dolores helps her. Luisa is slightly impatient during the interaction but Dolores doesn't seem too bothered. It is unknown if these spinoff stories are considered canon.
Julieta Madrigal[]
Julieta is Luisa's mother, but there is sadly no interaction or acknowledgement between them in the movie. It is unknown how Julieta felt about Luisa's struggles or breakdown.
The fans love to fill in these holes, however. Since they are considered among the busiest members of the family, fans speculate that they may not have been able to spend much time together, but that Julieta would have tried to check in on her every now and then. Many fans like to think that Julieta would have noticed Luisa's troubles, sometimes trying to comfort her or encourage her to take breaks before the events of the movie.
Agustín Madrigal[]
Agustin is Luisa's father, but there are minimal interactions between them in the movie. However, many fans like to headcanon that Luisa is something of a "daddy's girl" and that they may have spent a lot of time together when Luisa was younger. This headcanon is based on a couple of small moments in the film. When Luisa breaks down after the proposal dinner, Agustin is the only one who chases after her and calls her name. Many fans think he followed her to her room and comforted her there. She also helps Agustin earlier by carrying the piano for him to play. This sparked a headcanon that the two may have liked to play together when she was younger, but Luisa has to stop due to her busy schedule and/or super strength. There are many fanfics about them spending time together, especially when Luisa was young.
Casita[]
Luisa does not directly communicate with Casita the way Mirabel or Alma do, but she is seen enjoying its conveniences like the rest of the family. At the beginning of the film, Casita turns its floors into a moving treadmill so Luisa can work out. It also pours several cups of coffee that the family, including Luisa, grab to drink.
Pepa Madrigal[]
Pepa is Luisa's maternal aunt, but there is no interaction between them in the film. Many fans believe that Pepa is somewhat doting toward her nieces, but her relationship with Luisa is relatively unexplored.
Félix Madrigal[]
Felix is Luisa's uncle by marriage. While there is no interaction between them in the movie, fans speculate that they get along well due to Felix's fun personality. It's possible that he could have helped Luisa to loosen up a little so the stress didn't break her sooner.
Additionally, co-director Jared Bush has stated that the two have similar birthdays. Felix's birthday is on November 11th, while Luisa's is on November 14th. Because of this, fans like to think that they share birthday celebrations or have a gift exchange of sorts.
Bruno Madrigal[]
Bruno is Luisa's maternal uncle. Since he left the family when she was only nine years old, she likely doesn't remember much about him. She talks about him in the movie like he is a mysterious figure, having heard gossip that he had a terrible vision of the magic's failure before he left. However it is not entirely clear whether she fears him like many family members and villagers do. Bruno does not interact with Luisa at all in the film, but it is popular headcanon that Bruno was close with all his nephews and nieces before his departure (even though Jared Bush seems to imply otherwise). There are many fanfics where Bruno supports and bonds with a young Luisa. It is also speculated that he is the one who introduced her to Greek mythology, due to his love for storytelling.
