Hogwarts AU is a popular AU (Alternate Universe) within the Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons fandom. In the AU, Rapunzel, Merida, Hiccup and Jack Frost are all students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Because it is not canon, ideas for this AU are shown through fanfiction, fanart, and other fan-made works. Hogwarts AU is considered to be the most popular scenario in the RotBTD fandom today.

About the AU

The world of Harry Potter has been a popular universe for all fans to use for crossovers, and this is especially the case in the RotBTD fandom. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the perfect location for the Big Four to interact because of a number of reasons; it is an educational institute that gives an excuse for the four to be in the same area, it allows for the use of magic and the idea of dragons, and it adds elements of competition and rivalry between the Big Four and their friendship.

In most cases, being sorted into separate Houses along with other characters from their respective movies allows for relationship development in unique and creative ways. However, there are few authors that do sort them all into one House to set the rationality of their closeness as friends. Because of how Hogwarts separates their Houses, there is a sense of rivalry between them, and its students rarely get to meet up at the same time outside of double classes.

Featured Characters

The Big Four

While most often sorted into Gryffindor for their heroics, the Big Four are often seen sorted in separate Houses as a means to create a sense of camaraderie, "Breakfast Club" style. Some House choices are universally accepted, whereas others are more debatable.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III

By Spit-storm

Hiccup is a hard character to sort from the group and often debated among authors for where he truly belongs. He possesses the hardworking and loyal nature of a Hufflepuff, but also contains the thirst for knowledge and quick wit that is admired and portrayed by many Ravenclaw students. In his feature film, How to Train Your Dragon, he is shown to be intelligent, observant, and clever, as well as being able to use his friends and their dragons' weaknesses and strengths to defeat the Red Death.

In rare cases Hiccup may be placed into Slytherin due to his resourcefullness, ambition and clever nature and if his fellow Vikings are involved, due to their relationship with dragons (commonly seen as reptilian) and Hiccup's obvious awkwardness from his fellow Viking classmates. This puts good perspective on the different sides of the often stereotyped Slytherin student.

In other, less rare cases, he can also be sorted into Gryffindor due to his bravery and thirst to prove himself in his first film. Another motive for this placing is his willingness to die for his friends, and his loyalty to Toothless.

Often in this universe, he is known to still have Toothless as a pet dragon, going through the same befriending and training as his film, but within the Forbidden Forest.

In other circumstances, fans have Hiccup cast as Harry Potter, as he is sometimes place in Gryffindor and when his sword is used as the Sword of Grffindor, and for Hiccup's habit of stepping into danger, so he and his friends can do the right thing and the How to Train your Dragon books also having him collect "powerful" and special items, that could serve as the Horcruxs. His love for dragons, doing what he can to keep them safe and writing down what he learns from them in the Dragon Manual, can also portray him as Newt Scamander.

Jack Frost

Jack is commonly sorted into Slytherin for his mischievous and sometimes destructive nature which is seen more towards the start of his feature film, Rise of the Guardians. As a result, many stories feature him as a darker, more angst-ridden character compared to the other members of the Big Four, using his Sorting as a point of tension and plot drive. He is usually given a spot on the Slytherin Quidditch team as a Chaser or Seeker, creating a competitive spirit between him and Merida.

Other stories and artists have portrayed him as a Gryffindor, showing him more as a fun-loving trickster to replace the Weasley Twins or the Mauraders. This takes into account his traits of being brave and daring, his more heroic traits he developed near the end of his film.

Rarely Jack has been placed into Ravenclaw, due to the color scheme match and his tendency for witty banter. He is quick on the uptake and years of vagabond lifestyle permits him street-smarts, leading to assume creativity and originality, traits of the house. As the only one amongst the four to maintain a variety of magical powers he can be seen as naturally talented, suggesting an affinity for magic, a common trait of Ravenclaw. Jack is very competitive, a strong tie to the house, and also embodies other ideals of the house such as individuality and acceptance of others.

Depending on the fanfiction, Jack is sometimes returned to his regular mortal state as Jackson Overland in order for people to see him and for him to attend school. On the other hand, regular magic-users might not have a problem believing in and seeing a spirit like Jack, and therefore some writers leave him as the white-haired Jack Frost, even having him fall into the lake beside Hogwarts to receive immortality. His staff is also sometimes converted into a wand to fit within the Harry Potter canon, although this is not always the case. He also often simply uses his staff as a wand or flies on it in case he is playing Quidditch.

In other circumstances, Jack can be given the role of Harry Potter due to fans placing him in Gryffindor and is sometimes placed as his house's Seeker. Along with Jack being willing to help and stand with his friends and standing up to Pitch, who is sometimes seen as a Voldemort like character. Fans have also cast him as Newt Scamander.

Merida DunBroch

By Spit-storm

Merida is almost always sorted into Gryffindor, due to her bravery and sometimes foolhardy courage. Gryffindors are seen as strong-willed and sometimes do not think all of their choices through. This often is justified by the character traits she takes on near the end of her feature film, Brave.  Alternatively, some people have sorted her into Slytherin because of her ambition, resourcefulness, and self-centered desires, though it is not the primary choice.

Quite often in the fandom, Merida is shown to be on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, usually against Jack as a Beater or Chaser. She also is shown as not being the most astute student, often forgoing homework and studying for more exciting activities. Occasionally, she even takes up archery outside of the classroom.

In other circumstances, Merida could be portrayed as Hermione Granger due to her wild hair. While being a redhead could give her the role of Ginny Weasley, or any other female (version) member of the Weasley family.

Rapunzel Corona

It is widely disputed on whether Rapunzel should be in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff, as she possesses qualities indicative of both. As shown in her film Tangled, her creativity, thirst for knowledge, rational thinking, and drive to know more about the world outside her tower could sort her to Ravenclaw. However, she also has the traits that could place her in Hufflepuff, such as loyalty, honesty, and patience.

Rarely has Rapunzel been sorted into Gryffindor due to House Separaty. However, Gryffindor is also a very suiting House for Rapunzel, especially taking into account of her development in Tangled: Before Ever After. But even before the series did Rapunzel show traits of a Gryffindor, such as daring nerve, bravery, chivalrous behavior and a thirst for independence.

Additionally, she is often portrayed with her long blonde hair, however there are some artists that include her with her pixie cut. It is up to fanfiction writers whether her hair is as long or as magical as it is in the movie. Fans have even used her tiara as Ravenclaw's Diadem.

In other circumstances, Rapunzel's love of books and reading, being very bright and is sometimes placed in Gryffindor house by fans, she could be portrayed as Hermione Granger. While her blond hair, caring nature and Ravenclaw being of the houses that she is commonly placed in could also cast as her Luna Lovegood.

Honorary Members

Astrid Hofferson

Astrid is typically placed in either Slytherin or Gryffindor. The fandom seems to be divded in the aspect that she shows many trait for each house. She would be placed in Slytherin for her strong ambition and resourceful nature, but Gryffindor for her brave and run-head-on-into-situations personality. Alternatively, she, along with all of the other children from the village (par Hiccup) attend Durmstrang Institute of Magic. She is sometimes part of a duelling club or a Quidditch team, usually as chaser. Sometimes in a romantic relationship or good friends, it is unusual to have a negative relationship concerning Astrid and Hiccup.

Another placement for Astrid is that of Hufflepuff, which is a continuosly growing opinion in the fandom. This is due to her primary reasons and means to her actions; her ambition and hardworking nature goes hand-in-hand, but it's her unyielding loyalty and sense of fairplay that often are the reasons for her placement in the Badger's House.

Flynn Rider

Flynn is also usually placed in Slytherin or Gryffindor. More often than not, he is placed into Gryffindor for his reckless behavior and daring attitude. However, he is equally as often placed in Slytherin for his cunning personality and sly nature, especially at the beginning of Tangled

The Guardians

Occasionally, the Guardians attend school, but are more commonly seen as teachers rather than students. They are typically portrayed as human, magical beings or half-breeds. The houses they are placed in or associated with vary across the fandom community.

Queen Elsa of Arendelle

While some fans have debated on what houses Elsa is in, the most common house she is in is Slytherin for her introverted personality and general excessive prowess but also because she seems to try to reach perfection; or Ravenclaw due to her logical deductions, her intelligence and her need for control. Both Houses are reflected through Elsa in her feature film, but most of the traits are also stated in the canon book, "A sister more like me".

In other cases, Elsa is portrayed as Rowena Ravenclaw, founder of the House of Ravenclaw.

Because she was raised at birth in a refined and wealthy household (the royal family in the original film) Elsa and her sister would also be students of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, unlike Merida (who's kingdom is young and not as well-refined in comparison) and Rapunzel (who was born to a prosperous kingdom but was not raised in it).

Princess Anna of Arendelle

Due to her courage and initiative nature (not to mention her borderline recklessness), Anna is often seen as a Gryffindor. This usually puts her a little at odds with her sister, who is commonly made a member of her House's rival Slytherin. In other cases, Anna is portrayed as Helga Hufflepuff, founder of the House of Hufflepuff. Because she was raised at birth in a refined and wealthy household (the royal family in the original film) Anna and her sister would also be students of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.

On rarer occassions, Anna has been sorted into House Hufflepuff due to her loyalty and her patience.

Kristoff Bjorgman

For his more passive and neutral personality, Kristoff is placed in the House of Hufflepuff. In other cases, Kristoff is portrayed as Godric Gryffindor, founder of the House of Gryffindor.

Hiro Hamada

Hiro is often sorted into Ravenclaw for his intelligence and creativity, as well as Slytherin for his ambition in bringing Professor Callaghan to justice. Many fans also place Hiro into Gryffindor for his bravery and recklessness.

Hiro is occasionally seen as Harry Potter, as both characters have lost their parents at a young age and are living with their aunt.

Tadashi Hamada

Though Tadashi is often sorted into all four houses, he is most often placed in Hufflepuff for his extreme loyalty and willingness to help, or Ravenclaw for his brain. Tadashi is often seen as a professor of Cedric Diggory, or as the head boy of his house.

Toothless is usually shown as being a dragon rather than a human in this AU, since it's a fantasy universe, and therefore, dragons exist. Hiccup will often get him in his time at Hogwarts, but the way he gets him is different from fanfiction to fanfiction. In most cases, it's the same way as shown in How To Train Your Dragon, where the forest in Berk is replaced with the Forbidden Forest. In rare cases, he'll get him from an egg, replacing Hagrid.

It's up to the fanfiction author if the other members of the Big Four would support Hiccup in his beliefs about dragons or react like the rest of Berk - not believe him.

Prince Hans of the Southern Isles

Because of his ambitious initiative and underhanded means to accomplish it, Hans is almost always placed in Slytherin House. In other cases, Hans is portrayed as Salazar Slytherin, founder of the House of Slytherin. In rarer cases, Hans would also be a member of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic for his refined background, and while the films portray Beauxbatons as an all-girl school, the books claim that the Academy also possesses male students.

Mother Gothel

Usually portrayed as Rapunzel's "Mother" like in Tangled she is both devious and cunning as in the movie. Sometimes she is hidden as a staff member in Hogwarts (usually in the contact of Pitch Black) and sometimes she stays in the Tower. However she is always reluctant to let Rapunzel go to school as she fears somebody will discover the power of the flower. Gothel uses her powers of deceit and manipulation to make the four either start to distrust in themselves and Rapunzel's power. She also hoards the power of the flower to herself.

If introduced as a student, she is always placed in Slytherin, for her ambition to be everlasting, cunning, wiles, deceit and willingness to use ruthless and underhanded tactics to get what she wants.

Pitch Black

Pitch is often a part of this AU, but the way he's portrayed is different.

Sometimes he's a teacher at Hogwarts. He'll be a rather cruel teacher associated with Slytherin House, like Snape, Umbridge or the Carrows. However, many authors find him too evil to be a teacher and instead make him a famous, dark wizard, replacing Voldemort. In the fanfiction where he's a dark wizard, there will often be duels between him and some of the "good" wizards. In most cases Jack, but sometimes the other guardians or the whole Big Four will fight him. Whether or not he is a member of the House of Black differs.
