Dragon Warriors AU (also known as Martial-Arts AU, Ninja/Samurai AU, Kimono AU and China/Korea/Japan/Asian AU) is an AU in the fandom where the Big Four are warriors of Martial-Arts, Kung Fu and Karate or otherwise featured in an Asian setting. As it is not canon, ideas for this AU are shown through fanfiction, fanart, and other fan-made works.

About the AU[]

Spawning from fanart, this AU places the Big Four, and other such characters, as people living in one of Asia's continents, like China, Japan and Korea, where they are masters of Martial-Arts, Kung Fu, Karate and other fighting skills from South or East Asia. The four are also dressed in Kimonos, Ninja and Samurai getup. Because (half or whole) Asian characters and related references from the continent are already involved in the fandom, such a concept is not completely random.

Some fans like to create Chinese RotBTD styled fanart to mark the new lunar year. With the animal characters in the fandom, like Toothless, Bolt, Bunnymund, Maximus and Heihei, to serve as the Chinese Zodiac animal of that year, while the human characters (like the Big Four and their friends) are placed in Chinese clothing. Sometimes beside the Zodiac animal cast character.

Popular AUs[]

Featured Characters[]

The Big Four[]

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

Hiccup learned his skills from ancient scrolls he found in the old temple he used to play in as a kid with his friends and befriends a 'Chinese' dragon. His Zodiac animal sigh can be a Dragon (Element: Earth and stands for Lucky, eccentric, imaginative, artistic and spiritual) or Tiger (the year of the first How to Train Your Dragon film came out, while second film came out on the year of the Horse, third film on the year of the Pig/Boar and the first book came out on the year of the Goat/Sheep/Ram).

When it comes to placing Hiccup in Asian set/based stories (that are or aren't part of the ROTBTD fandom), Hiccup's connection with dragons and is the son of a chief strongly has him as a male version of Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon. Just as Hiccup's friendship with a dragon and is sometimes cast as Aladdin in the Arabian Nights AU, can also have him as Din Song from Wish Dragon. While the Hiccelsa pairing has fans portraying him as Xu Xuan/Sean from White Snake. He can also be cast as a male version of Yi from Abominable, as they have both lost their fathers and wanted to keep the creatures they befriended safe from the people who wished them harm.

Jack Frost[]

Jack is trained by the guardians to protect people from the dark and fetch old scrolls and powerful artifacts that cannot fall into the wrong hands, like Pitch and his Night Ninjas. His CZ sigh is sometimes a Monkey (Element: Metal and stands for Quick-witted, charming, lucky, adaptable, bright, versatile and lively) or the Dragon (as it was the year that Rise of the Guardians came out).

While Jack being a winter spirit and a Guardians of Childhood could have him as an Asian spirit of the icy element, of winter or as a type of guardian spirit from one of Asia's folklores. Jack's human form could even place him as an Asian spirit that takes the form of a human.

When it comes to placing Jack in Asian set/based stories (that are or aren't part of the ROTBTD fandom), the Jelsa pairing commonly has Jack as Xuan/Sean from White Snake.

Merida DunBroch[]

Merida wears a Kimono by day and places her samurai gear on at night. Fans like to place Merida in the year of the Horse (Fire and Adaptable, loyal, courageous, ambitious, intelligent, adventurous and strong) or Dragon (the year Brave came out).

When it comes to placing Merida in Asian set/based stories (that are or aren't part of them ROTBTD fandom), Merida being a warrior princess of a Disney film makes her a bit similar to Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon.

Rapunzel Corona[]

Rapunzel wears her Kimono (with Sun, Flower or Lantern patterns) while serving tea to her gests and when she's alone she works on her Tai-chi or martial-arts training in the garden. Her CZ birth sigh is the Rat (Fire and Intelligent, adaptable, quick-witted, charming, artistic and sociable) or Tiger (the year Tangled came out).

Extra Characters[]

Queen Elsa[]

Elsa wears a blue (sometimes a winter style) Kimono with white and blue flowers or snowflake patterns. She sometimes wears a flower or snowflake hairpin/clip in her hair. The flowers on her kimono or in her hair are sometimes the pink flowers she wears in Frozen Fever. Sometimes when fans switch Elsa's ice powers for fire powers in Elements AU, she is sometime given an Asian-like appearance and heritage, when her hair color is turned from blond to dark and is placed in a red Chinese style dress.

On 2019, a Frozen II styled Chinese New Year poster was made to mark the year that the film was realised in theatres.

After the release of the 2019 White Snake film, that serves as a unique prequel to the traditional Chinese fable of the Legend of the White Snake, fans began to edit Elsa as Xiao-Bai/Blanca or simply have Elsa wearing her beautiful white Chinese clothing in their most resent mockup artwork. For either Chinese/Asian setting AUs or the Jelsa and Hiccelsa pairings. Similar to how both Raya and the Last Dragon and Over the Moon have inspired fans to sometimes portray Elsa as Raya and Chang'e or to simply edit Elsa wearing either of their signer/iconic clothes.

Princess Anna[]

While Elsa wears a blue kimono, Anna wears a green or pink one with flower patterns. The flower patterns are sometimes the sunflowers from Frozen Fever, Arendelle's crest or the flowers that are on Anna's dresses in the film. since Anna is shown to be good with her fists, for when she punched attack Hans for his treachery towards the royal family of Arendelle, could have her learning Asian fighting styles, like Kung Fu and Karate.

When it comes to placing Anna in Asian set/based stories (that are or aren't part of the ROTBTD fandom), there have been occasions when Anna has been cast as Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon. Similar to how some have Elsa as Raya or similar have Else or Anna wearing Raya's iconic clothes, for fun.

On 2019, a Frozen II styled Chinese New Year poster was made to mark the year that the film was realised in theatres. One of Frozen's story artists and department supervisors, John Paul Brigga, has even drawn Anna as a Samurai; in which could have fans feature her as one in the AU.

Momakase[]

The AU allows fans to focus on the Ninja side of Momakase, along with the skills that she uses in the thieving side of her life. As some ninjas are presented as thieves. As well as her cooking side, for when it focuses on her civilian self as a sushi chef.

Hiro Hamada[]

Because of Hiro's half-Japanese heritage (that is mixed with his American one), as well as the fact that there are some Japanese themes in both the Big Hero 6 film and its follow-up TV series, fans commonly use, focus and involve Hiro in the Japanese side of this AU.

In "Hiro the Villain", Hiro wears a black and dark purple ninja-like suit when Momakase blackmails him into helping her retrieve a pair of Daishō swords that belong to her family. Hiro ends up wearing his ninja-like getup again, along with him making Megan Cruz a similar one, in "Legacies".

Tadashi Hamada[]

Because of Tadashi's half-Japanese heritage (that is mixed with his American one), as well as the fact that there are some Japanese themes in both the Big Hero 6 film and its follow-up TV series, fans commonly use, focus and involve Tadashi in the Japanese side of this AU.

GoGo Tomago[]

GoGo is of Korean descent, which might be why fans place her in this AU with the Hamada brothers and the rest of the Big Hero 6 team. When fans have them embrace the Japanese theme that is used in both the film and TV series, as well as the Marvel comic team that they are based on.

In "Legacies", Megan is given ninja-like getup that is similar to the one Hiro wears in "Hiro the Villain".

The second Miraculous World TV film has Marinette visiting her uncle in Shanghai, while one of the upcoming Miraculous World films will have her traveling to Japan.

Sometimes in Chinese New Year fanart within the Miraculous fandom, fans like to feature Marinette and some of her friends beside the Kwami that is the animal-theme of that year. The fanwork sometimes has her wearing Chinese style clothing beside the Kwami or in the superhero garb she wears when she is using their Miraculous. For example: during the last year of the Rat, Marinette was featured as her Multimouse self, or is placed in Chinese Multimouse style clothing, beside Mullo in a Chinese background style setting.

Prince Merlin[]

Since Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs was made by a South Korean film company and spell tags (like the ones Merlin uses to summon and wield his lightning magic) come from Asia, fans can easily feature Merlin (and possibly the rest of the characters from the 2019 film) in the Asian setting AU. Both Merlin and Red Shoes/Snow White were also revealed to be Korean.

Raya[]

Because Raya comes from a Southeast Asia based world and this has her as a young Asian woman, Raya can be portrayed as herself (much in the same way that Hiccup plays himself in the Viking AU).

The tiger, monkey, dragon and horse forms that four of the Renlings grant Fei through the Prodigious resemble four of the twelve animals that are in the Chinese Zodiac. While the rest of her animal forms represent the animals that inspired a few of the Kung Fu fighting styles.

Princess Elena[]

In the Elena of Avalor TV series, Elena is shown to have royal allies from a Japanese based kingdom known as Satu. King Toshi and his brother Soji have appeared in the series a few rare times, while there are theories that Tomiko might also be from Satu, due to her being a Japanese (based) girl. In "Model Sister", Elena wears Satu/Japanese style clothing while getting to know some of the kingdom's Asian based customs, to please their guests.

Walter Beckett[]

Walter is shown to be a fan of Korean Dramas and since he doesn't sub the Korean dubbed episodes and was listening to one through his headphones when he went to save Lance, it subjects that he speaks or simply understands Korean.

Adrien Agreste[]

One of Adrien's voice over webisodes has him telling the viewers of the webisode that he is learning how to speak Chinese as one of his scheduled lessons and we get to see him speak it in "Kung Food". His Cat Miraculous ring is also from the Chinese Miraculous set, and there have been a few Asian references and (half or whole) Asian characters in the series.

Adira[]

Since Adira is revealed to be a Korean character, fans have use this fact to embrace the Korean side of this AU as well as Adira's Asian blood, in the same way that the Japanese themes showed in both the Big Hero 6 film and TV series has them focusing on the AU's Japan side. While the fandom's Chinese characters, like Fei Fei, Chang'e, Blanca and Marinette (who is half Chinese) has them embracing its China side, as for Raya and the Last Dragon fans focus on all sides of Southeast Asia.
