Book of Life AU (also known as Mexico/Hispaniola AU, Dia De Los Muertos AU, Day of the Dead AU and Calaca AU, not to be confused with Walking Dead AU) is an AU introduced through fanart, depicting the Big Four (or at least one of the characters) as Calacas that come back to earth on the Day of the Dead.

About the AU[]

In this AU, members of the Big Four are placed in the world of Mexican folklores and being apart of the Dia De Los Muertos/Day of the Dead celebration. As the Mexican holiday allows the departed souls to cross over from the Land of the Dead (or the Land of the Remembered) and back into the land of the living so they could see their families, while the living get together to remember and pay respects to their deceased family members and heroes. As the name implies, the setting usually mirrors The Book of Life, though this is not required. The same with Coco, as both films circle around the same holiday, music, the country and culture of Mexico and traveling to the world where their ancestors reside in; as well as the fact that the two franchises are part of the fandom. Just as a few (half and whole) Hispanophone characters, like Honey Lemon, Fawn, El Macho, Elena, Claire Nuñez and Mirabel Madrigal, are part of it as well.

Usually the characters are placed as Calacas, skeleton souls that have passed on from the Land of the Living but live on in the Land of the Remembered/Dead, presumably fuelled by the memories of those who knew of their legends and deeds when they were alive. The four are also featured in an Mexican/Hispanic setting (as well as a Colombia setting to reference Encanto), much like how the Dragon Warriors AU places them in an Asian setting.

Featured Characters[]

The Big Four[]

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

Hiccup is seen as a Manolo-like character for the similarities between the two. Being raised to be a bullfighter (in place of his past training as a "dragon killer") by his father, but dreams of following his own path and doesn't enjoy killing what his family have killed for years in the ring. Toothless would be placed as a bull that Hiccup is fund of and sees as a friend. Hiccup's art skills could even have him doing dragon-style Alebrijes. Should Hiccup be placed as a Calaca that resides in the Land of the Dead, then some of the markings on his skeleton body would most likely be made to look like his red Dragon Racing face paint.

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Hiccup is commonly seen as Manolo Sánchez for his kind heart and not wanting to harm the animals that his family have been killing for years. There have also been times when the Hijack paring has Hiccup as a male Maria Posada.

As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Hiccup can be cast as a male version of Mirabel Madrigal as both characters want to make their family proud and were seen as the blank sheep of their home town/village. This could also have him as Bruno Madrigal. While the Hiccelsa pairing has cast him as Pedro Madrigal.

If Hiccup were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, he can quite easily be cast as a male version of Elena, from how the two had to pick up their father's role after their deaths and are very close with winged creatures. There have also been times when Hiccup is seen as Gabe, from how the two want to please their fathers while continuing to go down the paths that they have set for themselves.

Jack Frost[]

Since Jack is already a spirit he can easily be portrayed as a Calaca, that resides in the Land of the Dead. The markings on his skeleton body would most likely be made to look like the frost that appears on his staff, whenever he touches it.

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Jack has been cast as Manolo Sánchez for the Hijack or Jelsa pairings. As well as fans having him as Joaquin Mondragon. If Jack were to be placed into the storyline plot of Disney Pixar's Coco, he can be cast as Hector for being alone for a very long time until he connects with a young boy, who helps Jack to end his loneliness. As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Jelsa has him as Pedro Madrigal from how Jackson Overland had died after he manged to save his sister while Pedro placed the lives of his family above his own life. The Jelsa pairing and how some see Elsa having one or two Pepa-like treats, Jack could also be cast as Félix Madrigal, as there have been a few Jelsa stories that have Jack helping Elsa with the emotion side link of her powers.

Merida DunBroch[]

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Merida can be portrayed as Maria Posada, due to their spirited and rebellious nature. As well as both being beautiful young women that value independence and freedom, knows how to defend themselves and would not hesitate to stand up for what they think is right. As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Merida can been cast as Luisa Madrigal from how both girls are strong and the fact that they are older sisters. If Merida were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, she can be cast as Naomi Turner from the two being tomboys in their own ways and are proud to be their own types of ladies, while others would want them to behave like a proper woman.

Rapunzel Corona[]

Rapunzel is commonly seen as a Calaca that resides in the Land of the Dead. Corona's sun crest is seen as the most common marking on her skeleton body, while a few purple and sometimes a few green and yellow colored markings are seen around it. Since Rapunzel is sometimes seen as a (living) Mexican girl, she could use her art skills to make or paint Alebrijes figures of animals that are seen in the Tangled film and TV series. Or could have Pascal as a Chameleon Alebrije, as they are placed as living creatures that exist in the world of Disney's Coco.

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Rapunzel's beauty, kindness, and magical hair that could potentially keep her young and immortal, could portray her as La Muerte, with Eugene playing as her cynical and sarcastic husband Xibalba. Much like La Muerte, Rapunzel is sweet and kind, and is fair and just. She does have a small temper, and would be willing to punish those who fairly deserve it, but she would never give them harsh punishments. She can also be portrayed as Maria Posada, for her love of animals, beauty, and art, along with her feisty side.

As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Rapunzel has been cast as Isabela Madrigal from how both Disney characters have their own connection to flowers and have tried to be the perfect daughter for their families and community/kingdom. While Rapunzel's former healing powers and has a talent for cooking baked goods, could have her as Julieta Madrigal. There have also been rare occasions when Eugene's common role as Mariano Guzmán has got Eugunzel fans to portray Rapunzel as Dolores Madrigal.

If Rapunzel were to be put into the story of Disney's Elena of Avalor, she can be cast as Elena from how both Rapunzel and Elena are princesses who were taken away from their families and thanks to the help of their friends, as well as the many adventures they went on together, have helped them to pick up the role of queen.

Extra Characters[]

Pitch Black[]

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Pitch Black is usually portrayed as Xibalba, the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten.

Toothiana[]

Being the Guardian of Memories and caring for both her fairies and the children of the world (and her mean right hook on Pitch) makes her La Muerte, the ruler of the Land of the Remembered, when she is placed in the storyline of The Book of Life. While being a mysterious, magical being, her colorful feathers and bird-like form could place her as a Alebrije from Mexican artisan folklore; along with her fairies (as they are placed as living creatures that exist in the world of Disney's Coco).

Mother Gothel[]

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Gothel's black hair, red dress and the Gothitch pairing can cast her as La Muerte. While her 'truth' age serves as La Muerte's Old woman disguise.

Jamie Bennett[]

Jamie, his little sister and their friends can easily serve as the Detention Kids. The children that La Muerte, as Mary Beth told Manolo's story to, when he and his friend are placed in The Book of Life's storyline.

La Muerte[]

The ruler of the Land of the Remembered, La Muerte can either be portrayed as herself (much like how Wreck-It Ralph is portrayed as himself in the Arcade AU), or can be portrayed as the Mexican goddess that she is based on and deeply resembles, Catrina. Sometimes for rolebending La Muerte is placed as a human living in Mexico, as well as a Manolo or Maria-like character.

Xibalba[]

The ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, Xibalba can be portrayed as himself (much like how King Candy is portrayed as himself in the Arcade AU). Sometimes for rolebending Xibalba is placed as a human living in Mexico, as well as a Joaquin-like character.

Candlemaker[]

Candlemaker can be portrayed as himself (much like how Fix-It Felix, Jr. is portrayed as himself in the Arcade AU). Sometimes for rolebending Candlemaker is placed as a human living in Mexico.

Manolo Sánchez[]

Since Manolo is a Mexican citizen, bullfighter, a mariachi (a Mexican musician) and has spent time as a Calaca, he is commonly portrayed as himself (much like how Hiccup is portrayed as himself in the Viking AU). Sometimes for rolebending and the Juanolo pairing, fans have Manolo as a male version of La Muerte. With Joaquin as Xibalba and Maria as a female Candlemaker.

Since both The Book of Life and Coco are Mexican themed films that are part of the fandom, fans could portray Manolo as Héctor Rivera, for fun. As well as placing him in Coco's version of the Land of the Dead and its modern version of the Land of the Living.

Joaquin Mondragon[]

Since Joaquin is a Mexican citizen, he is commonly portrayed as himself (much like how Wreck-It Ralph is portrayed as himself in Arcade AU). Sometimes for rolebending and the Juanolo pairing, fans Joaquin as Xibalba. With Manolo as a male La Muerte and Maria as a female Candlemaker.

Maria Posada[]

Since Manolo is a Mexican citizen, she is commonly portrayed as himself (much like how Rapunzel is portrayed as herself in the Rapunzel AU). Sometimes for rolebending, fans have Maria as a female version of Candlemaker. With Manolo as a male La Muerte and Joaquin as Xibalba.

Since both The Book of Life and Coco are Mexican themed films that are part of the fandom, fans could portray Maria as Imelda Rivera, for fun. As well as placing her in Coco's version of the Land of the Dead and its modern version of the Land of the Living.

Queen Elsa[]

Elsa is commonly seen as a young Mexican woman or a Calaca that resides in the Land of the Dead, while the markings on her skeleton body are mostly of a icy blue color and have a snowflake style and theme to them.

When placed in the storyline of The Book of Life, Elsa is commonly portrayed as La Muerte, and her being a spirit helps to support this role choice. Along with the Jelsa pairing having her as Maria Posada. If Elsa were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, she can be cast as Elena from the two being magical royals who are older sisters and want to be the best queens that they can be for their people and family. Similar to how Elsa's powers were shown to be connected to her emotions and had caused her trouble through her fears of it, Elena had went through something similar when she gained emotion magic that caused her trouble before she later learned how to control it, as well as her emotions.

As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Elsa is seen as Isabela Madrigal from how both of them were forced to be prefer and are older sisters with magical powers, while their youngest sisters don't have any of their own. The pressure Elsa feels and is strong in her own way has also got fans to see her as Luisa Madrigal, just has her powers being connected to her emotions and how her negative emotions have caused her and Arendelle trouble makes her more like Pepa Madrigal, along with the Jelsa and Hiccelsa pairings having her as young Alma Madrigal. There have even been rare occasions when Elsa is placed as Mirabel Madrigal.

Hiro Hamada[]

Because of the Hiroguel pairing and the Racebend AU, he is commonly placed as a young Mexican citizen. While Miguel is made a citizen of Japan.

Princess Anna[]

When put into the story of Disney's Encanto, Anna has been commonly cast as Mirabel from how both characters have older sisters who were blessed with magical powers while Anna and Mirabel don't have any of their own. While Anna's longing for love with the man of her dreams could have her as Dolores Madrigal. There have also been times when Anna has been featured as young Alma, while Kristoff serves as Pedro, as well as casting her Isabela for pure fun. If Anna were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, she could be cast as Elena or an older version of Elena's little sister, Isabel. Should Anna be put into the storyline of Book of Life, she can be cast as Maria as both girls are tough and good with a sword, as well as having men being interested in her.

Ian Lightfoot[]

If Ian were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, he could be cast as a male version of Mirabel Madrigal. From being a younger sibling who helps to bring his family closer together.

Barley Lightfoot[]

If Barley were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Barley would be cast as a male version of Luisa Madrigal. From being a strong older sibling.

Eep Crood[]

If Eep were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, she'll be cast as Luisa Madrigal. From being an older sister who is strong and has used her strength to help her family.

Moana Waialiki[]

If Moana were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, she can be cast as Dolores Madrigal from the curly style of her hair. While Moana being a Disney protagonist who takes it upon herself to save her family after uncovering the danger that threatens them, could also have her as Mirabel Madrigal. She also be placed into the storyline of the Book of Life, from how her strong personality and can handle herself well in a fight can easily have Moana as Maria Posada. If Moana were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, she can be cast as Elena from how their stories had the two starting out as princesses before they go on a long journey that has helped them to become the leaders that their family and friends are proud of.

Mavis Dracula[]

If Mavis were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, she can be cast as Dolores Madrigal from how the fourth Hotel Transylvania showcased her own "super-hearing" ability and gets to be with the person she loves.

Alberto Scorfano[]

If Alberto were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, his ability to turn from a sea monster into a human, as well as his personality can easily have him as Camilo Madrigal.

Prince Merlin[]

If Merlin were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Encanto, the way that the curse placed upon him had allowed Merlin to swap from his cursed dwarf form into his true human one, whenever someone isn't looking at him, could have him Camilo Madrigal. Having two forms and the way that his friends had tried to win the heart of the girl they all fell in love with could even have him as Manolo, should he be placed in The Book of Life storyline.

Cassandra[]

If Cassandra were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, she can easily be cast as Naomi Turner from how the two help their princess friends with their royal duties and can handle themselves in a fight. Should Cass be placed into the storyline of Book of Life, she could be cast as Maria from the way she doesn't back down from a fight and knows how to use a sword. As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, Cassandra being a female who is tasked with daily chores could have her as Luisa.

Varian[]

If Varian were to be put into the storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, he could be cast as Mateo from how Varian was first mistaken for a wizard and is close with a magical princess.

Flynn Rider[]

If Flynn were to be put into the storyline of The Book of Life, he can easily be cast as Joaquin Mondragon for his charms and from being seen as a horseback riding hero. Should Flynn be put into the storyline of Disney's Pixar's Coco, he could be cast as Hector from the times Eugene was down on his luck, the way he tried to help Angry and Red and had worn disguises to trick or hide himself from those who have been searching for him. As for the storyline of Disney's Encanto, many fans see him as Mariano Guzmán for his handsome appearance and the way he was set to be engaged to someone else before he met and fell in love with Rapunzel (even though she has commonly been seen as Isabela than Dolores).

Astrid Hofferson[]

If Astrid were to be put into the storyline of The Book of Life, she can be cast as Maria Posada from being a brave young woman who knows how to use a weapon and has had more than one man fall in love with her. Should she be put into storyline of Disney's Elena of Avalor, Astrid's blond hair and personality can easily cast her Naomi Turner. As Vikings were known to be skilled sailors, while Naomi has travelled by air on a winged creature and there have been dragons who have some cat-like behaviour.
