Arabian Nights AU (also known as Aladdin AU, Arabia AU, Harem Dancers AU and South Asia AU) is an AU in the fandom where the Big Four are cast as characters from the Arabian Nights Tales or are placed in a South Asian setting. This can be considered an offshoot to Fairy Tale AU.

About the AU[]

Spawning from fanart, this AU places the Big Four, and other such characters as people living in the ancient city of Arabia (and in the country that it is based in) and as characters from the Arabian Nights Tales. Like Aladdin (even when the story is sometimes placed in Ancient China, and fans often focus on Disney's animated version of the story), Sinbad the Sailor, the Forty Thieves and more. The four can also be featured in an Indiana or South Asian setting, as some of the female characters are dressed up as harem girls and dancers in the AU.

While the AU focuses on the tale of Aladdin (mostly in the forms of Disney's traditionally-drawn 1992 version and its live-action remake released in 2019) the most and is usually used as template, this doesn't mean that it is main focus of the AU. Fans are freely encouraged to create original stories, videos, and artwork set within this AU outside of the tale of Aladdin if they so choose.

Because Sinbad is a pirate-like sailor, fans like to consider this AU an alternative to Pirate AU.

Featured Characters[]

The Big Four[]

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III[]

Hiccup is portrayed as Aladdin, his Genie or a male Jasmine (with Toothless as either Carpet, Abu or Rajah from Disney's Aladdin), a prince of Arabia, or a 'Street Rat' with Jack and Aster. Hiccup could also be cast as Sinbad or a male Marina, from how the original-book's incarnation of Hiccup has a connection to the world of pirates and the fact that Vikings were also known to be skilled sailors than just brave warriors.

Hiccup's connection and bond with dragons could even have him as Din from Wish Dragon, since the 2021 film is a modern set Chinese version of Disney's Aladdin, that has a wish granting dragon instead of a genie. While a few Aladdin pantomimes have the story set in old China and there have been a few other versions of Aladdin that have had a dragon as part of its plot. As either the guardian of the cave that the lamp was sealed in, the villain's "pet" or as the genie.

Jack Frost[]

For the Jarida, Jackunzel, Frostbite, Hijack, Janna, and Jelsa pairings he's cast as Aladdin. He can also be cast as the sailor Sinbad or a thief living on Arabia's streets. There have been also times when fans have cast Jack as a male Princess Jasmine.

Merida DunBroch[]

For Jarida and Mericcup she's cast as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin. She is also seen as a sailor on Sinbad's ship, a princess of Arabia or one of Forty Thieves (for freedom, adventure and a chance to use her skills). Fans have also portrayed her as a harem girl.

Rapunzel Corona[]

Like the 2010 film, Rapunzel is Arabia's lost princess with her tower as one of the old ruins (that were said to exist in legend) in the vast desert, the daughter of the city's sun god (or goddess) or a female genie (of lamp or ring) from Aladdin. She is also portrayed as a harem girl or dancer, while being a princess that falls in love with a thief casts her as Princess Jasmine.

Extra Characters[]

Flynn Rider[]

Being a former thief that left his thieving ways after falling in love a princess and is now living in a castle, Flynn can easily be portrayed as Aladdin. While his thieving past can make him a member of the Forty Thieves, or even a Street Rat living on the streets.

Megamind[]

Because of Megamind's blue skin and the disguise generator watch allowing him to change his appearance, he is commonly seen as the Genie from Disney's Aladdin.

Queen Elsa[]

Elsa is commonly seen as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin for the Jelsa, Elsanna, Helsa and Hiccelsa pairings. Fans have also placed Elsa as a harem girl and dancer, as well as a genie because of her magic.

Princess Anna[]

For the Kristanna, Janna and Peanna pairings, Anna is portrayed as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin, while a few Elsanna fans prefer to have Anna as a female Aladdin for when Elsa is seen as Jasmine. Fans have also placed Anna as a harem girl and dancer.

Toothiana[]

When Jack is Aladdin, Tooth (as a human) is commonly seen as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin for the Frostbite pairing.

Lance Strongbow[]

Since Lance's voice actor (James Monroe Iglehart) has played the role of Genie in Aladdin the Musical (and with Lance painting a lamp in one of the Tangled: The Series episodes), it can easily portray Lance Strongbow with the role of Genie in the AU. As Flynn is sometimes placed as Aladdin while Rapunzel is Jasmine. There have even been fans who have cast Lance as Aladdin for the Lancandra pairing. Lance's thieving past can make him a member of the Forty Thieves, or even a Street Rat living on the streets with Flynn.

Royal Guards of Corona[]

Since the Royal Guards from Tangled had spent most of the film cashing after a thief before he won the heart of their princess, they can easily be placed as the guards from Disney's Aladdin. Which could also portray the (former) Captain of the Guards as Raziel.

Astrid Hofferson[]

For the Hiccstrid pairing, Astrid is seen as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin.

Vanellope von Schweetz[]

Since Vanellope meets the Netizen version of Jasmine in Ralph Breaks the Internet, while traveling through the physical world within the real-life internet, fans can cast Vanellope as her for fun.

Olaf[]

Some fans have cast Olaf as Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin, for fun. In Olaf Presents Olaf does play Jasmine, as well as a few other characters from the classic Disney film, as he re-enacts the story in his own unique way with Sven and Marshmallow.

Moana Waialiki[]

Moana's dream of seeing the world beyond the borders of her home and is a type of "royal", can have her as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin.

Sisu[]

Sisu's blue color scheme, is a magical being and is friends with a human, has inspired fans to compare Sisu with the Genie from Disney's Aladdin. In 2021, a modern Chinese version film of Aladdin, known as Wish Dragon was released and like Sisu, Long is a talking Asian dragon who befriends a human and has his own human form. There have also been several other known versions of Aladdin that have the story set in old China or have included a dragon as part of its plot.

Adrien Agreste[]

Adrien has been cast between Aladdin and a male Princess Jasmine for the Adrienette pairing. Since his cat hero persona can easily serve as his Prince Ali self or possibly the "runaway" disguise that Jasmine undertakes when she snuck out of the palace, and their is also the fact that both Adrien and Jasmine are acquainted with a type of cat and has lived their lives being sealed away from the rest of the world.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng[]

Marinette has been portrayed as Princess Jasmine for the Adrienette and Lukanette pairings. She has also been portrayed as a female Aladdin for when Adrien is cast as a male Jasmine, while her Ladybug heroin persona could serve as her Ali self. There have even been fans who have Marinette as a Genie.

Luka Couffaine[]

Luka has been portrayed as Aladdin for the Lukanette pairing.

Plagg[]

For when Adrien is cast as a male Princess Jasmine and the fact that Plagg is a type of cat, fans like to portray a life-size panther version of Plagg as Rajah. While the times that fans have Adrien as Aladdin could have Plagg serve as Abu.

Tikki[]

When Marinette is cast between Princess Jasmine and a female Aladdin, Tikki can be cast as either Rajah or Abu.

Pitch Black[]

With Jack Frost commonly portrayed Aladdin and the ROTBTD fandom having Pitch antagonize the people Jack has been paired up with and have been portrayed as Jasmine through those pairings, Pitch has been cast as Jafar.

Rose Lavillant[]

Rose fancying a prince called Ali has inspired fans to portray her as Princess Jasmine.

Dagur the Deranged[]

Dagur has been cast as Aladdin for the Dagcup pairing.

Princess Elena[]

Elena being a princess who is close with a type of big cat, can cast her as Princess Jasmine.

Tom Kullersen[]

The way Tom offered Jun a ride on his flying friend and gets her to not close her eyes during the romantic flight-like scene, can easily cast him as Aladdin.

Jun Wong[]

The way that Jun was with Tom when he offered her a ride on Thunder and had closed her eyes for a short second during the romantic flight-like scene, can easily cast her as Princess Jasmine. There is also the fact that Jun is Chinses, while one of the most earlier versions of the original Aladdin story was set in old China.

Din Song[]

Since Wish Dragon is a modern Chinese version of Aladdin and Din is based on the titled character, he can easily be cast as Aladdin. While Li Na serves as his Jasmine and Long as his Genie. One of the most earlier versions of the original Aladdin story was set in old China, while Wish Dragon takes place in modern China.

Li Na Wang[]

Since Wish Dragon is a modern Chinese version of Aladdin and Li Na is based on the princess from the story, she can easily be cast as Princess Jasmine. While Din serves as her Aladdin. One of the most earlier versions of the original Aladdin story was set in old China, while Wish Dragon takes place in modern China.

Long[]

Since Wish Dragon is a modern Chinese version of Aladdin and Long is based on Aladdin's genie, as well as Long being able to grant three wishes per master like any other genie is said to do, he can easily be cast as the Genie of the Lamp. One of the most earlier versions of the original Aladdin story was set in old China, while Wish Dragon takes place in modern China.

Pockets[]

Since Wish Dragon is a modern Chinese version of Aladdin and Pockets is based on the main villain from the story, he can easily be cast as Jafar. As there have been a few fans who have Pockets make a few Jafar-like references in their fanworks.

Alya Césaire[]

For the DJWifi pairing, Alya has been cast as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin.

Nino Lahiffe[]

For the DJWifi pairing, Nino has been cast as Aladdin from Disney's Aladdin.

Prince Hans[]

Hans being a villain who wants another kingdom's throne to himself, as well as the times when Elsa or Anna have been portrayed as Jasmine, Hans is cast as Jafar from Disney's Aladdin. There have also been times when fans have cast Hans as Aladdin. Despite Hans being an antagonist it hasn't stopped Helsa and Hanna fans from portraying the villain prince as a hero character, due to AUs that have Hans reform and redeem himself to one of the Frozen sisters.

Isabela Madrigal[]

Because of the way Isabela was forced into the idea of marriage by a member of her family, despite her not liking the person that was picked for her, along with her family being acquainted with a big cat, has inspired a few fans to portray Isa as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin. Even though Jasmine was not shy to share her thoughts on the law that was forcing her into marriage (until the princess met someone that she can truly loves), Isa was prepared to go with the marriage in order to please Alma while keeping her true thoughts on the matter to herself.

Lance Sterling[]

Lance Sterling could easily be casted as the Genie of the Lamp since his voice acter, Will Smith, also portrayed Genie in the live-action remake of Aladdin. Further adding to this casting choice, Lance Sterling shares Genie's (in his non-magical form) darker complexion and humorous charisma.
